Let It Whip
The Chunkers sound has gone global! Stepping up for the eighth volume of Sally C's influential imprint is Paperkraft from Japan. The ascendent producer in a mainstay of the Osaka scene and has been on Sally's radar in recent times thanks to a standout EP on Physical Education that had a "real driving breaky old skool" vibe she loves. Elsewhere he's dropped the tight 'Not C but K' on Homage, remixes of Gearmaster on Hidden Assets and material on Mindhelmet and Tombolo. His contribution to the BSC cannon is thrilling from the get-go. The lead 'Play Somethin' Nasty' is a natural born Chunker, bursting with attitude and sass. Simultaneously colourful, yet cohesive, it mixes up playful hip house vocals with plump b-lines and plenty of rave energy, before a squelchy bass frenzy highlights the second stanza. 'Funky Blah Blah' is informed by '90s Italo and funky house and is a cute bridging track with plenty of character. 'Drop The O.S.B.' is a legit fire cut that's already become a favourite of Job Jobse after it ignited DC10 this summer. It takes the old skool rave spirit of 'Play Somethin' Nasty' and amplifies it to 11, resplendent with rapid- fire raps, hoovers and a mammoth key-driven riff. 'Let it Whip' is a slick DJ tool that channels understated hard house energy, powered by an addictive vocal loop. Paperkraft follows BELLA, Eliza Rose, Papa Nugs and remixes Peach and CARISTA in joining the Big Saldo's Chukers family as Sally C delights in growing the label via a carefully curated roster of artists.
