When Souls Collide
Anil Aras makes a welcome return to the Dutch powerhouse imprint, PIV, with his new four-track 'When Souls Collide' EP. Title-cut 'When Souls Collide' opens the release and sees Anil express this depth of soul, dynamism and musicality through and amalgamation of jazzy keys, smooth chord sequences and cinematic strings, further fuelled by a swinging rhythm section and weight sub bass groove. 'Shy Times' follows next and leans towards a Chicago House tinged aesthetic thanks to ethereal chords, twitchy resonant synth hooks, oscillating low-end pulsations and swinging drums. Opening the flip-side is 'Feel Free', a hard hitting house jam based around an infectious vocal hook, intricate organic percussion and saturated drums constructed in a dance floor tool fashion. 'Dexed TEK' then conludes the EP and leans into dub house territory via fluttering stab echoes, intertwined chords, bumpy bass notes and crisp low slung drums.
